[Example of Play] The Construction Site

You hear the woman settle herself and sniffle back the tears. Finally she calls out from behind the door.

"Who is it, what you want it late!" HHervouce now stern a significant change from what you just heard.

I quickly look to see if there is a name anywhere outside the door before I answer.

There is no name visible. The address isn't even all there anymore. There are hooks by the door where it looks like a mailbox used to sit before being violently removed.

"Hello?! I call policia!"

"No ma'am. I'm a reporter. May I ask you a question or two?"

"Why you here so late? Not good place to be after dark."

There is the sound of multiple locks being released before you see the door open. There is still a glass door with steel bars between you and a diminutive mexican woman. Evidence of her crying still visible but well hidden.

"What you want to know, senior?"

"Has the neighbor hood always had this air? err, when did it start being unsafe to be out at night?"

"For you, senior, the banditos see you out here all dressed in your fancy suit, your problems be mucho grande. The Locos might let you live, but you not be out of hospital for couple days."

She scans the street and sidewalks looking past you as she speaks.

"Is there somewhere else we can talk that you'd feel more comfortable?"

The woman checks the street again then sighs heavily.

"Quickly, senior, come inside before someone sees you."

She ushers you through the door into a spartan living room. The furniture obviously on its third or fourth owner.

"Please, senior, what do you want? How do you not know about the gangs in this area?"

After taking out my pen and note book I ask to sit, and when she notions to a chair/spot on couch I take it.
I reply, "I was notified by the owner of the construction lot over there," I point towards the direction of the lot. "He's attempting to build in the area and had some trouble. He asked me to come and find out more. May I ask how long you've lived here?"

She seems to hesitate at questions about her directly.

"We have papers sir, no problem, visas and green card. No problem." She starts to fidget nervously, " my husband has the papers but he work very late. You have to come back tomorrow."

Hoping to calm her down, I smile. "Miss I'm not with immigration, or anything like that. I am just the decedent of an Immigrant. You should be proud of what you are doing to help your children. It's the American Dream.

"The man who is attempting to build over there only has the best in mind for this neighborhood. Do you know anything about the construction?"

You reassure the woman and she calms down considerably. Finally taking a seat across from you.

"Sorry, senior, sorry." She collects herself. "Now, what can I help you with?"

I lean back in my chair slightly, looking more relaxed now that I know she is calmed down. I cross my leg over my lap, and hold my notebook over it. With my pen in hand over the paper, I look up at her.
"It's quite alright. Now, the man who is trying to build over there, he only has the best in mind. Do you know anything about the construction?"

"Only that they start months ago but nobody ever does any work. I haven't even seen anyone there in a week."

I nod as I jot down, local in past week has not seen
I look back up, "When you say seen anyone, do you mean workers, or any one at all?"

"No. No working, no nothing." She shakes her head emphatically.

"No one comes there at all in weeks"

I finish jotting down no one, works or not.
"Now do you believe this is because of the Locos? Are they a vocal group?"

"I see no Locos there. The workers came but they stop working very quickly. A couple of men come now and then and walk around, check on the trailer and equipment I think. But no work in weeks."

Jot down, Locos not seen there.
"Two quick questions, you have not seen a worker there in a week? And how often do you see the Locos?"
